THE CLASSIFICATION OF FRENCH CHAMPAGNE
- Grand Cru: The highest of the regional classifications, 17 communes in Champagne hold this status.
- Premier Cru: The second highest classification in Champagne. 44 communes hold this strictly regulated status.
- The remaining 255 communes of Champagne are not classified or are labelled Autre Cru or village.
Designation of quality
Champagne is categorised into different quality levels, which determine the maturation period and the ratio of grape varieties. The best-known quality levels are "Non-Vintage" (NV), "Vintage" and "Prestige Cuvée". A great champagne will normally have one of these designations on the label.- Non-Vintage (NV): These are the most commonly available champagnes. They are made from a blend of several vintages and offer the characteristic consistency of the house.
- Vintage: These champagnes come from a single exceptional vintage and show the unique characteristics of this special year.
- Prestige Cuvée: These champagnes represent the highest quality of the house and are often made from the best grapes. They are generally more expensive, but also have an exceptional flavour.
