James Suckling: 93 points
Alcohol content: 15 % vol.
Grape varieties: 80% Samsó (Cariñena), 20% Grenache
Vinification:
Careful selection in the vineyard and in the cellar. The grapes are foot-pressed and then fermented in 1500-litre open wooden vats. After fermentation, the wine is matured in 300-litre French oak barrels (50% new) for 12 months.
Tasting note:
The concentration and mineral complexity reflect the terroir of this single vineyard. The seamlessly integrated acidity and crisp tannins lend a fresh elegance that is perfectly embedded in the velvety texture.
Herènica Altés:
Herència Altés is a winery located in the impressive mountainous landscape of Batea (Terra Alta), an area of outstanding soils and climatic conditions for the production of great wines with personality and authenticity. The project of Nuria Altés and her life and wine companion, Rafael de Haan, was born from the idea of bringing the potential of the Garnacha grape in this area to the world, with grapes that come exclusively from their own vineyards, some of them centenary and with very low yields.
The new winery literally merges with its surroundings and works practically with renewable energy (natural thermal insulation and water recycled from the rain); its ageing room is completely underground to naturally ensure that the temperature and humidity are constant throughout the year. At Herència Altés, large wooden barrels are used to create long barrique times while minimising the impact of the wood.
