James Suckling: 92 points
Alcohol content: 14.5% vol.
Grape varieties: 100% Tempranillo
Vinifiaktion:
Fermented on natural yeast and refined in French oak barriques.
Tasting note:
On the nose, this 100% Tempranillo is intense, complex, with aromas of black cherries, plums, blackberries, blueberries, cassis, mocha and dried herbs. The palate is compact, structured, powerful, finely tannic, with notes of dark fruits and berries, again cherries, coffee and cardamom. A versatile wine for aromatic, complex dishes. Decant in advance.
Bodegas Emilio Moro:
The winery has only existed in its current form since 1988 - the modern winery has 55 hectares of its own vineyards, which are almost exclusively planted with Tempranillo. Some of the vines are over 80 years old. Strict controls of all processes in the vineyards and low yields are just as much a matter of course for the Moro family as selection and modern cellar technology.
In addition to French oak, Emilio Moro also uses American oak for barrel ageing, which is sometimes supplemented with Romanian oak depending on the requirements of the wines. Only the Malleolus wines are aged exclusively in French oak; the two tiny single vineyards Valderramiro and Sanchomartin are among the best wines in Spain.
