Tasting note:

2019: Brilliant golden yellow in colour. Freshly cut grapefruit, elderberry, fine wood and, as unusual as it may sound, molten rock. This is followed by ripe orange, freshly plucked thyme and sage. The attack is soft for a brief first moment, but then its straightforwardness dominates, despite the immense complexity.

An effervescent acidity sets its ripe components in motion and emphasises its immense length and minerality.

2021:

The intensely yellow-coloured 2021 Malanser Chardonnay from Thomas Studach opens with an intense and noble bouquet that is reminiscent of the finest cognac and makes you want a cigar. The very elegant and balanced nose is characterised by vanilla and very fine oak or roasted aromas, which are perhaps a little over-perfumed, but in a truly noble way. On the palate, this is a pure, intense and savoury Chardonnay full of lush fruit, tension, texture and a very fine tannic grip.

The finish is still influenced by the barrel ageing (and toasting), but this is undoubtedly an excellent Chardonnay from Malans that needs a few more years in the bottle to fully develop. It is a powerful wine that would have been nice with more subtle oak. 12.8% stated alcohol. Diam cork stopper. Tasting in February 2023.

Thomas Studach:

Thomas Studach has been producing his extremely rare wines since 1988. He produces a maximum of 12,000 bottles on just 3 hectares. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Completer. Yields are kept very low by pruning, and only the best grapes are used. Studach is a great advocate of working in the vineyard, clean work pays off. His wines are often labelled 'world class'. He produces wines of immense depth, complexity and longevity.

The great potential of the wines is immediately apparent at the first tasting. Either you drink the wines young in the fruit phase, or you let the wines mature for 5 to 8 years or more and your patience will be rewarded with great wine art, which need fear no comparison with the great Burgundies. Patience is rewarded with the great cinema of Swiss winemaking.
