Chateau Malescot Saint Exupéry:
Processing four grape varieties into one great wine
The Malescot is made from four grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. All four grape varieties fully express their unique characteristics and harmonise perfectly with each other.
They are grown in different parts of the vineyard, depending on the different soil structures and types. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot account for 50 % and 35 % of the vineyard respectively. Cabernet Franc takes up 10 % of the vineyard and Petit Verdot only 5 %. Both contribute to the depth of flavours and the density of the wine.
The winery has HVE certification. (High Environmental Value). The château uses rational agricultural practices and organic control methods to improve environmental principles. The estate covers 28 hectares in the Margaux appellation area. Each hectare is cultivated with the same care.
The Malescot style
The fruit is picked by hand and transported in crates. The wine is made with as few additional ingredients as possible. Maturation on the lees in barrels that are 70 % new. The barrels are stirred regularly and no additional yeast is added. The wine is not fined or filtered and is only decanted once during the ageing process. The Chateau makes Batonnâge sur Lies, the wine is unaged, unfined, unfiltered and is only decanted once during the ageing process.
The wine is aged in barrels for 12 to 14 months. Each vintage is blended differently, which makes Malescot unique. At least 70 % of the harvest is processed into the main wine.
