James Suckling: 92 points

Alcohol content: 14% vol.

Grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc

Vinification:

Maturation in barriques.

Tasting note:

Intense aromas of blackberries, plum jam and cinnamon, plus some coffee and vanilla from the barrique. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful with plenty of extract, concentrated and dark berry fruit, sweetish flavour, integrated wood, full and warm on the long finish.

Château Pierre 1er:

Until 1985, owner Jean Dutruilh was one of the world's top mogul skiers and even achieved many a victory in this demanding sport. Today, he owns the eleven-hectare Château Pierre 1er, which he took over from his father. It is located to the north and east of the Gironde and Dordogne. The vineyards are situated on a hilltop with optimal drainage; the typically gravelly soils of Bordeaux provide the best growing conditions for the various grapes. The vines are on average 36 years old and consist of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. This terroir produces fully ripe grapes every year, resulting in powerful, concentrated wines. Star oenologist Michel Rolland, who is a close friend of the family and advises them during the vinification process, certainly has a significant influence on the final wine.
