Gambero Rosso: 2 Biccheri
Alcohol content: 14.5% vol.
Grape varieties: 100% Merlot
Vinification:
The grapes are fermented in wooden vats. The wine matures for 6 to 7 months in 20 % new barriques.
Tasting note:
This single-varietal Petra Merlot Quercegobbe is characterised by its rich aroma of red and dark fruits, light spicy notes, balsamic accents of myrrh and eucalyptus and men's chocolate. The palate is very elegant thanks to its minerality, elegant and deep with fine tannins; body, alcohol and acidity are clearly pronounced and balanced. Wonderfully long on the finish! Petra winery Petra is part of the Vittorio Moretti empire. The Lombard building contractor is primarily famous in the wine world for his outstanding Bellavista sparkling wines from Franciacorta. In 2003, he inaugurated the winery in Maremma, designed by Mario Botta and run by his daughter Francesca. The trained oenologist had carte blanche, so to speak: practically all the facilities were newly built. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines account for the majority of the production. There are smaller stocks of Sangiovese and Syrah. All plots are planted at maximum density and some are cultivated according to organic principles (in conversion). The slopes benefit from natural drainage and optimal sunshine. Part of the cultivation is under conversion Mario Botta has designed the shell of the building in such a way that its most striking part, a staircase, points from the earth to the sky. Vittorio Moretti and his team of consultants developed the interiors with all the wine-specific furnishings themselves. The inclusion of gravity for the transport of grapes, mash and wine, the matching of the container capacities to the plot sizes and much more were essential. One small detail: there are no machines in the rooms where the wine is stored - it should be able to mature in peace and quiet.
Petra:
The Petra vineyard has a range of microclimates, with mostly little rain, lots of sun and strong south-westerly winds. The soils are also very different. At Petra, everything resonates in harmony and aims to define a unique style that is able to bundle the strengths of the terroir and transform them into wine.
In the cellar, it is human sensitivity that makes the difference. All these elements give rise to Petra's wines, which are able to take the threads of the past and weave them into a modern fabric.
