Falstaff: 95 points
Alcohol content: 14.2 % vol.
Grape varieties: 55% Zweigelt, 30% Merlot, 15% Blaufränkisch
Vinifcation:
14-20 days of spontaneous fermentation on the skins at 30-32°C in wooden fermentation vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in barriques. Matured for 18 months in new French oak barriques.
Tasting note:
Dark ruby-garnet colour, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Nuances of black fruit, fine precious wood, delicate hints of cassis and liquorice, tobacco nuances, attractive spice. Complex, ripe heart cherries, good freshness, ripe, firm tannins, mineral-salty finish, some nougat, very good length, great ageing potential.
Winery Markowitsch:
Gerhard Markowitsch is one of those exceptional talents who know how to produce exceptional wines. Through perfection in the vineyard, meticulous selection of the grapes and interaction with the latest technology, the likeable winemaker manages to refine his wines every year and further improve their quality.
Gerhard Markowitsch's wines are authentic, independent and accurately reflect the characters of local and international grape varieties. In 1999, Falstaff named him Winemaker of the Year; and his "Markowitsch M1" has just been awarded the full 100 points by Falstaff. His principles of patience, balance, character and technique have thus paid off in full. We are thrilled - not only by the variety, but also by the character of each individual wine. A particularly exciting producer who we will certainly be hearing a lot more about in the future.
