Origin of the name

The name „Clinet“ appeared as early as 1785 on historical maps (the Map of Belleyme) as „Cliné“. The term is thought to be derived from the Old French word cliner from, which means „bend“ or „tilt“ means. This is a direct reference to the gently sloping hillsides that stretch down from the famous plateau in Pomerol.

Location & Terroir

The vineyard is situated in the heart of Pomerol, north-east of Libourne.

The plateau: The vineyards are situated on the the highest point of the famous Pomerol plateau – right next to absolute icons such as Château Pétrus and Château Le Pin.

The floor: The terroir covers just over 11 hectares and consists of deep, old Gravelly soils and clay. The extremely rich subsoil, consisting of iron slag (Iron Crasse), which gives the wines their unique body and structure. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Owner

The estate is owned by the The Laborde family.

Jean-Louis Laborde purchased the château in 1998.

Ronan Laborde (his son) took over the day-to-day management in 2004 at the age of just 23. He carried out extensive modernisation of the cellars (among other things, the estate now relies entirely on gravity rather than pumps) and runs the château together with his wife, Monique.

Château Clinet combines the traditional opulence of Bordeaux’s right bank with modern precision. [1]

The grape varieties: The vineyard is dominated by Merlot (approx. 80–85 %). What is unusual for Pomerol, however, is that compared with its neighbours high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (often up to 15–20 %) and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc.

The style: The wine is extreme concentrated, juicy and with creamy, velvety tannins. The Cabernet component lends the wine an elegant freshness, structure and remarkable ageing potential, without ever seeming heavy. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
