James Suckling: 97 Punkte
Falstaff: 96 points
Alcohol content: 15.5% vol.
Grape varieties: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot
Vinification:
Maturation: 18 months in new French oak barriques; after bottling in summer, the wine is aged for several months before being released onto the market.
Tasting note:
Dense wine with dark berry nuances and dried wild herbs on the nose. Juicy on the palate, powerful in structure yet round and opulent without being clumsy, with a finish of caramel, dried figs and ripe cherries - enormous length.
Tua Rita:
Tua Rita has cult status and enjoys an excellent reputation. Not far from the Tyrrhenian Sea, picturesquely situated on a hill in the small medieval village of Suvereto, the initially small artisan business has developed into a modern company over the course of time.
The area under cultivation has grown steadily from two hectares at the beginning to 30 hectares now. Founded by Virgilio Bisti and Rita Tua, the fortunes of the estate have been increasingly determined by daughter Simena and her dynamic husband Stefano Frascolla for several years following the death of her father.
The soils are medium-heavy, stony and loamy, contain clay and sand and are also rich in mineral trace elements such as zinc and iron.
On the 50-hectare estate in Maremma, the vineyards located directly behind the winery are characterised by low and moderately sloping hillsides. Depending on the location, the density of the planting varies between 5,000 and 9,000 vines per hectare.
