Tasting note:
Rich ruby-purple colour. Rich and appealing nose, full of plums. Has a lot of fine spice on the palate, of dried herbs, sage and curry herb, full-bodied on the palate, already amazingly polished tannins, again lots of plums on the finish.
The Fattoria Le Pupille is one of the most renowned top-class wineries in the Tuscany, famous for producing the Maremma’s first true cult wine and for putting the region on the world map.
Region: The vineyard is situated in the Maremma, the southern stretch of the Tuscan coast.
Surroundings: It’s up to Istia d’Ombrone near the town Grosseto.
Soils and climate: The vineyards stretch across rolling hills (named after two historic farmsteads on the hilltops, the „Pupille“). The area benefits from a warm, Mediterranean microclimate with cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea and a wide variety of sandy, clay and sandstone soils.
Pioneer: The winery is run by Elisabetta Geppetti managed. She took over the business from her father-in-law in the mid-1980s.
The Signora: Geppetti is regarded as „Signora del Morellino“ and a key ambassador for the region. She was also the first female president of the local wine consortium.
Next generation: Today, she runs the winery as a family business together with her children, particularly her eldest daughter Clara Gentili.
Duality in the product range: The style combines the juicy, The Mediterranean elegance of Tuscany with an international structure. The range extends from classic Sangiovese wines to full-bodied Bordeaux-style blends. [
Flagship wines:
Saffredi: A world-famous Super Tuscan (A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot), which offers depth, complexity and excellent ageing potential.
Poggio Valente: A single-varietal Sangiovese cru. It deliberately emphasises terroir, finesse, precision and structure rather than sheer power.
Morellino di Scansano: The estate’s traditional wine. It is always approachable, fruit-forward, herbally spicy and typically Tuscan.
