Fermentation and maceration for 25 days in concrete, maturation for 18 months in new oak barrels.
Tasting note:
The Messorio is a wine that beautifully reflects the characteristics of the vintage and is a very accurate gauge of how a single vintage will develop in terms of both short-term accessibility and long-term cellar maturation. Le Macchiole 2017 Messorio plays its strongest cards in terms of mouthfeel and texture, showing a robust structure and tightly integrated tannins that come from both the richly concentrated fruit and the careful use of oak. The wine shows a heavy focus and a solid base of dark fruits complemented by caramel, brown sugar, spice and creamy blackberry jam. It offers immediate appeal, but I would wait a few more years to give this 2017 Messorio more time to develop and evolve.
Le Macchiole:
The 22 hectares of vineyards are extremely densely planted with around 10,000 vines per hectare and are cultivated organically. The grapes are very strictly selected. From the very beginning, the aim of the management was to maximise the characteristics of the terroir in the individual subzones on their own land.
The Le Macchiole winery has received numerous top ratings from wine critics to date. For its many years of service, it was recognised as the best winery in Italy by the Associazione Italiana Sommelier (AIS) in 2009 and two years later by the magazine Wine Enthusiast crowned winery of the year.
