James Suckling: 97 points

Alcohol content: 13.5% vol.

Grape varieties: 100% Riesling

Vinification:

Smaragd is a designation first introduced for wines from the 1986 vintage for the best and most valuable wines of the Wachau. These particularly precious wines, with a minimum alcohol content of 12.5 vol.%, can only be produced in the best years. Wines with the designation Smaragd may only be sold from 1 May of the year following the harvest. Smaragd lizards feel particularly at home in the Wachau vineyard terraces and have become a symbol of Wachau wine with perfect ripeness.

Tasting note:

Inviting fresh fruit notes of peach, apricot and the finest blossom honey on the nose. A multi-faceted bouquet. Wonderful interplay of fruit and acidity, powerful, plenty of extract and minerality perceptible. Convincing length at the end. A delicacy.

Emmerich Knoll:

The Emmerich Knoll winery in Unterloiben is one of Austria's best-known wine estates. The traditional label enjoys a similar cult status in wine connoisseur circles as the wines themselves. Emmerich Knoll is no friend of fleshy, exuberant wines. Dense wines that show strength in a condensed form without going overboard - that is the credo of this top winery. Emmerich Knoll and his equally wine-loving son Emmerich Junior cultivate around 45 % each of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner on the 14 hectares of top vineyards Schütt, Loibenberg, Kellerberg, Kreutles and Pfaffenberg, with Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller, Rivaner, Blauburgunder and, for some years now, Gelber Traminer sharing the remaining 10 per cent.
