Maturation in barriques.
Tasting note: Aromas of stewed fruit and lots of cassis on the nose. Alongside spicy tones, hints of tobacco and liquorice. A very fine tannin structure on the palate, juicy and with lots of flavour, wonderful sweetness and fantastic freshness.
The historic winery Château Citran is one of the oldest châteaux in Bordeaux and is known as Cru Bourgeois classified.
Region: The vineyard is situated on the left bank of the Gironde in the Haut-Médoc.
Parish: The approximately 90 hectares of vineyards are spread across the municipalities Avensan and Margaux.
Terroir: The vineyards border directly on the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation. They benefit from a maritime climate. The surrounding pine forests protect the vines from strong westerly winds.
Owner: The vineyard is owned by the well-known Bordeaux winemaking family Merlaut (Taillan Group).
Led by: The estate is managed by Claire Villars-Lurton.
History: The Merlaut family took over the château in 1996. It had previously been owned by the Japanese Fujimoto Group, which invested heavily in its modernisation.
Overview of grape varieties: The cuvée is traditionally made up of around 58–60 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 40–42 % Merlot together.
Removal: The wine is aged for around 12 to 15 months in French oak barriques, with around one to two-thirds of the barrels being new.
Second wine: The estate also produces a popular second wine called „Moulins de Citran“.
Aroma: The nose is dominated by dark berry fruits such as blackcurrant and cherry, paired with spicy notes of tobacco, cedarwood, liquorice and subtle Cabernet spice.
Flavour: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, of medium intensity and well-structured, with lively acidity.
Mouthfeel: The tannins are dense, yet velvety and harmoniously integrated.
Shelf life: The wine is renowned for its consistency and excellent Value for money and a considerable Storage potential known.
