The Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry is a renowned French wine estate in the Bordeaux region, which was classified in the historic 1855 Bordeaux classification as Troisième Grand Cru Classé (Third Growth) was classified as.
Region: South-west France, Bordeaux (left bank of the Garonne).
Appellation: Margaux AOC.
Floors: The vineyards, covering around 28 hectares, are situated on deep, typical Pyrenean gravel soils (layers of gravel and sand), which are partly interspersed with clay and limestone in the subsoil. These soils provide excellent natural drainage and optimally reflect heat back to the grapes.
Current ownersSince 1955 the winery is owned by the The Zuger family. Today, it is run by Catherine and Jean-Luc Zuger, with Jean-Luc Zuger serving as managing director.
Historical namesake: The name derives from Count Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Exupéry (great-grandfather of the famous pilot and author of *The Little Prince*, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry), who purchased the estate in 1827.
Grape variety index: As is typical of the Médoc, Cabernet Sauvignon predominates (approx. 50 %), followed by Merlot (approx. 35–45 %), Cabernet Franc (approx. 10 %) and a small proportion of Petit Verdot (approx. 5 %).
flavour profile: The wines from Château Malescot St Exupéry combine the characteristic feminine elegance and bouquet of Margaux with remarkable power and depth.
Key features:
Flavour: Intense notes of dark berries (blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry) combined with elegant woody and toasty aromas, as well as floral hints (violet).
Texture: Silky, creamy, yet very powerful tannins.
Shelf life: The wines possess a lively acidity and plenty of structure, giving them enormous ageing potential. Unlike some other traditional Margaux wines, Malescot often appears somewhat more opulent and full-bodied in its youth, yet never loses its finesse.
