75 cl

Alcohol content: 14% vol.

Grape varieties: 100% Nebbiolo

Vinification:

Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa:

Since 1854, Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa in Nizza Monferrato has been synonymous with classic Piedmontese wine culture, indigenous grape varieties and wines with exceptional ageing potential. Scarpa adheres to a clear philosophy: great wines take time. The individual grape varieties and vineyard sites are vinified separately, slowly and as naturally as possible, so that their origin and character take centre stage.

Scarpa since 1854 – great wines take time
Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa is one of Piedmont’s most historic wineries. Since its foundation in 1854 in Nizza Monferrato, the estate has been synonymous with classic winemaking, long ageing periods and a consistent focus on the wines’ terroir. Scarpa does not view tradition as stagnation, but rather as the foundation for a distinctive identity.

In the cellar, a simple principle applies: the wine is given the time it needs to develop. Many wines mature for years in traditional large oak barrels and then continue to age in the bottle. They are only released onto the market once the winery considers them to have reached the desired level of maturity.

From Monferrato to the Langhe
At the heart of the estate lie the 25 contiguous hectares of the Tenuta Poderi Bricchi, situated between Castel Rocchero and Acqui Terme. Here, Scarpa is deeply rooted in Monferrato and its winemaking tradition.

In addition, there are around five hectares in renowned cru vineyards in the Langhe. Scarpa thus links its home in Nizza Monferrato with some of the most famous terroirs for Nebbiolo, Barolo and Barbaresco:

  • Monvigliero in Verduno
  • Roncaglie in La Morra
  • Canova in Neive

At Scarpa, the different terroirs, soils and microclimates are carefully highlighted. The wines are not intended to conform to a uniform flavour profile, but rather to reflect their respective origins as authentically as possible.

Indigenous grape varieties – the diversity of Piedmont
Scarpa remains steadfastly committed to the traditional grape varieties of Piedmont. The focus is on Nebbiolo and Barbera, complemented by a range of rare indigenous varieties. In this way, the winery preserves part of Piedmont’s diversity of grape varieties, which extends far beyond Barolo and Barbera.

  • Nebbiolo: Piedmont’s great red grape variety and the basis for Scarpa’s Barolo and Barbaresco
  • Barbera: a traditional grape variety from Monferrato and the basis for the legendary Barbera d’Asti Superiore «La Bogliona»
  • Freisa: a native Piedmontese red wine grape variety with a distinct, unique character
  • Ruchè: a rare, aromatic red wine variety from Piedmont
  • Brachetto: a traditional, aromatic grape variety from Monferrato
  • Pelaverga: a rare Piedmontese grape variety, native in particular to the area around Verduno
  • Timorasso: an old white grape variety from Piedmont, known for producing full-bodied white wines with good ageing potential

La Bogliona – Scarpa’s great Barbera
One of the estate’s flagship wines is the Barbera d’Asti Superiore «La Bogliona». As early as 1974, Scarpa recognised the potential of the Barbera grape for long-lived, top-quality wines and pursued an approach that was by no means commonplace at the time: Barbera should not only be enjoyed young and fruit-forward, but should also produce a full-bodied, structured wine capable of ageing for many years.

La Bogliona is vinified using traditional methods and is given plenty of time to develop. As it matures in the bottle, the wine gains depth, richness and complexity. This makes it one of Scarpa’s most distinctive wines and impressively demonstrates the ageing potential of the Barbera grape variety.

Barolo and Barbaresco – Scarpa in the Langhe
With its vineyards in the Langhe, Scarpa also produces classic Nebbiolo wines from renowned sites. One such exceptional wine is the Barolo Monvigliero from Verduno. The plot, measuring just 0.64 hectares, is planted with vines dating back to 1968. The Barolo produced from these vines has an ageing potential of over 20 years.

The Barolo Tettimorra from La Morra is made from vines, some of which were planted as early as 1955. It is aged for around 29 months in large French oak barrels. Here, too, the focus is not on the wine being ready to drink quickly, but on the long-term development of the Nebbiolo.

The Scarpa Caveau – a wine cellar for generations to come
The philosophy of long ageing is particularly evident in the estate’s historic cellar. Scarpa stores numerous old vintages of his wines in his own cellar, some dating as far back as the middle of the last century.

These historic bottles are more than just an archive of the company’s history. They document the exceptional ageing potential of classic Scarpa wines and enable us to trace the development of individual grape varieties, vineyard sites and vintages over the decades.

The distinctive Scarpa bottle
Visually, too, Scarpa has its own distinct identity. Many of its wines are bottled in an amber-coloured Burgundy-style bottle, specially produced for the estate, featuring an elongated neck and an embossed Scarpa logo. This distinctive bottle has been part of the winery’s image for decades and makes Scarpa instantly recognisable.
