Vinification:

Fermentation in large, open wooden fermentation vats, all by hand, malolactic in barriques, ageing in special barriques that have a cigar-like shape and allow more yeast, wood and air contact.

Tasting note:

Deep dark ruby colour, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate notes of cherries with a hint of tobacco, fresh orange zest, dark forest berries in the background. Juicy, elegant, ripe cherries, powerful, round tannins, sweet extract on the finish, good length, fine nougat on the finish, definite ageing potential.

 

The Château La Croix Saint Georges is a renowned, small winery in the world-famous appellation Pomerol in the Bordeaux wine-growing region of France. It is owned by a long-established family of winemakers Janoueix and is now run by Jean-Philippe Janoueix led by someone who is renowned for his precise, quality-focused and innovative work.

Historical origins: The name is derived from the chivalric Order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem (Order of Malta), to whom the estate once belonged.

Landmark: The façade of the cellar is adorned with a striking sculpture of St George on horseback battling the dragon.

Location & Terroir

A great neighbourhood: The vineyard is situated at the entrance to Catusseau, right on the famous The Pomerol Plateau. It is right up there with absolute icons such as Le Pin, Vieux Château Certan and Petit Village.

Size & Floor: A very small, just 4.2 to 4.5 hectares extensive plot. The soil consists of deep, perfectly well-drained Gravelly and loamy soils with calcareous subsoil.

Vine Mirror: The vineyard is planted predominantly with Merlot – depending on the specific plot, with approximately. 91 % to 95 % Merlot and a small proportion Cabernet Franc.

Owner & Winemaker

Owner: The estate is owned by the long-established The Janoueix family.

Management: The château is headed by Jean-Philippe Janoueix. In the world of wine, he is regarded as a perfectionist with a keen eye for detail, an advocate of high planting density in the vineyard and modern, precise winemaking using gravity-fed systems.

Style & Winemaking

The classic style: Traditionally, the estate has stood for a opulent, full-bodied and expressive Pomerol style. The wines display great depth, ripe fruit, extract-driven sweetness and creamy, velvety tannins, combined with well-balanced freshness.

Change of style (from 2023): With the recent arrival of the well-known consultant Thomas Duclos (from the 2022/2023 vintage onwards), the château has seen a stylistic reorientation towards significantly greater precision, ethereal elegance, refined finesse and more subtle woody notes.
