James Scukling: 92 points
Alcohol content: 14.5% vol.
Grape varieties: 94 % Tempranillo, 6 % Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
Vinification:
All grapes are harvested by hand in crates of no more than 15kg. The grapes are harvested at the optimum point of ripeness, which marks the ideal harvest time. This is done separately for each of the more than 25 different plots used to make this wine. After the selection tables, the wine is put into barrels to macerate at a low temperature before fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation then takes place at 25 ºC, followed by malolactic fermentation and ageing in new French oak barrels for 27 months.
Tasting note:
Clear and shiny ruby red colour with dark purple nuances. On the nose, it has a great aromatic intensity, complex and elegant, dominated by aromas of red forest fruits, which are paired with the subtle tertiary aromas of the barriques, leaving retronasal hints of smoked and roasted notes. Enveloping and structured, with great suppleness thanks to its sweet tannins. Sensationally silky and long on the finish.
Bodegas Arzuaga:
The winery was founded in the early 1990s by the Arzuaga-Navarro family and is a prime example of their commitment and passion for terroir and wine. Quality is paramount here! And that starts with the care in the vineyard.
It guarantees that yields are extremely limited, in keeping with the harsh Castilian climate and the poor soils. This leads to a high concentration in the grapes, which in turn is the prerequisite for the quality of the wines.
