Vinfication:

The wine is grown from vineyards at an altitude of 100 to 200 metres above sea level. The soils consist of quartz sandstone, clay with marl limestone, flysch and red sand. The climate is temperate Mediterranean with frequent sea breezes. The viticulture, based on methods and principles that fully respect the environment, allows a spontaneous production of grapes that is never excessive, an essential reason to guarantee the authentic expression of the area of origin. The grapes are harvested by hand from vineyards with an average age of 24 years. Fermentation took place in steel vats and ageing continued for 8 months in barriques. The wine will be bottled in August 2022.

Tasting note:

The Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso DOC presents itself with a bouquet of fresh red and dark fruits paired with notes of prunes, chocolate and tobacco. On the palate, Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso DOC has an opulent concentration of fruit, melting with flavours of dark fruit and cloves. Fine but noticeable tannins, fine-meshed tannins perfectly advanced. Grattamacco's entry-level wine shows impressively where this winery is heading. The advantage of this wine is that it can be drunk young, whereas it is advisable to wait a few years before opening and savouring the top wines.

Podere Grattamacco is a historic, world-famous Winery in the Bolgheri appellation in Tuscany, Italy. It is regarded as one of the most important Pioneers of the region, as it was only the second winery ever to market wines under what is now the legendary appellation.

The winery is particularly well known for the fact that, unlike many of its neighbours, it still cultivates the traditional Tuscan grape variety Sangiovese incorporated into his cuvées and used to produce top-quality white wines from the Vermentino grape is famous for.

Location: The estate is situated on the hills between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri. It benefits from a dry microclimate influenced by the sea.

History: It was founded in 1977 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari. Today it forms part of Claudio Tipa’s prestigious ColleMassari Group.

Management: The approximately 25 hectares of vineyards are entirely ecological / organic managed.

The vineyards are mainly planted with typical „Bordeaux grape varieties“ as well as Sangiovese:

Red varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

White variety: Vermentino.

Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore DOC: The estate’s flagship wine. An elegant, long-lasting cuvée made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. It is aged in French barriques.

Bolgheri Rosso DOC: A more approachable, fresher red wine. It is characterised by aromas of ripe cherries, herbs, tobacco and subtle spices.
