75 cl
Alcohol content: 13% vol.
Grape varieties: 53% Sauvignon Blanc, 37% Vermentino, 6% Viognier, 2% Verdicchio, 2% Semillion
Vinification:
After careful selection, the grapes were pressed slowly and gently, taking particular care to protect them from oxidation. After about 12 hours of clarification, 23% of the musts were transferred to new barriques and 27% to used barriques, while the remaining 50% were transferred to steel, concrete or wooden tanks. During alcoholic fermentation, the temperature did not exceed 22°C. No malolactic fermentation was used. During the 6-month ageing period, the lees were stirred at fixed intervals. Before bottling, the different batches were blended together and underwent a light fining. The wine then underwent a final 12-month refinement in the bottle before being released onto the market.
Tasting note:
The 2022 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia is made mainly from 53% Sauvignon Blanc, 37% Vermentino, 6% Viognier, 2% Verdicchio and 2% Semillon. It is fragrant and fresh with aromas of lemongrass, sweet sage, honey and green apple floating high in the glass. Pretty mineral notes of flint and gravel round it off. This is an acidic, easy-drinking white wine that would go well with the delicious freshly caught seafood of the Tuscan coast. The wine is partly aged in new and neutral oak and cement.
Tenuta dell' Ornellaia:
Care at all levels: At Ornellaia, every single process in the vineyards, in the cellar and in the management of the winery is a question of the right instinct. Countless small details combine simplicity and perfection.
Detailed knowledge of the vines and their careful care form the basis of our approach to the estate's terroir. Ornellaia's vineyards consist of many small plots, each of which is cultivated individually in order to express its unique character in absolute harmony with the respective vintage.
Part of the Ornellaia area was once covered by the Mediterranean - sandy deposits, marl and marine fossils bear witness to this prehistoric era. At a slightly higher altitude, clay soils interspersed with limestone gravel of varying sizes come to light.
The soils of Ornellaia are of marine, alluvial and volcanic origin. Over time, man has been able to utilise their respective advantages better and better. The vineyards are divided into dozens of plots: Each of them is a microcosm with its own identity and form of expression. Mediterranean scrub flourishes around the vineyards.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the winery's predominant grape varieties, followed by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng, Viognier, Verdicchio and Vermentino are cultivated for the white wines. The rows of vines are predominantly south-west facing in order to make the most of the last rays of sunshine before it sets over the sea.
