Robert Parker: 98 points
Alcohol content: 14 % vol.
Grape varieties: Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo
Vinification:
Fermentation in open wooden vats with ambient yeasts. The wine is then matured for 14-16 months in 1500-litre wooden barrels.
Tasting note:
The magnificent, complex and elegant Tabuerniga 2020 comes from a difficult year, as the vineyard was hit by hail. It was fermented in open 3,000-litre oak barrels with indigenous yeasts and matured for 14 to 16 months in 1,500-litre oak barrels. The Tabuérniga terraces were the first to be harvested in 2020, from the sixth of October, and yet the wine has a moderate alcohol content of 14 %. It is elegant, expressive, clean, focused and balanced, combining power and elegance, with fine tannins and a long finish. In April 2022, 3,960 bottles were bottled. They have six hectares here, and they only produce this limited number of bottles.
Telmo Rodriguez:
Wherever you talk about Spain's outstanding wines, the name Telmo Rodríguez quickly comes up. The Basque has a special talent for combining tradition and modernity.
Travelling through the country and its rich and varied landscapes, he and his partner Pablo Eguzkiza came into contact with both traditional and unknown winegrowers who were full of experience and knowledge about their winegrowing region.
Through joint projects, the Compañia de Vinos Telmo Rodrígez has grown steadily over the last few decades. They adapted to the diversity of the soil and the climate through the endless combination of different varieties and thus learnt to respect nature, which was the basis for their path. Today, they see their task as finding enclaves, understanding them and giving them meaning again. Some old vineyards are being retained, others are being replanted with the idea of how the best winegrowers of the past would have done it.
Telmo Rodríguez has an unerring instinct for terroirs and grape varieties; it is not for nothing that his wines are labelled "top quality".
