Vinification:

Alcoholic fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts. A 4-week maceration with gentle racking and malolactic fermentation in barrels.

Ageing takes place 50% in new barriques, 35% in concrete amphorae and 15% in second-use barriques. Maturation lasts between 16 and 18 months.

Château Pontet-Canet is a world-famous wine estate in Bordeaux, which is listed in the official 1855 classification as Cinquième Cru Classé (Fifth Growth) was classified as such, but is now on a par with the prestigious „Super Seconds“ acts.

Name & Origin

Origin of the name: The compound name is made up of the founder’s name and the original field name.

Foundation: Jean-François de Pontet, then governor of the Médoc, acquired his first plots of land near Pauillac in the early 18th century. In 1757, his descendants purchased an adjacent plot known as „Canet“. Since then, the wines have borne the name Château Pontet-Canet.

Location & Terroir

Appellation: The vineyard is situated in the heart of the region Pauillac in the Haut-Médoc (left bank of the Bordeaux region, France).

Neighbourhood: The vineyards cover around 81 hectares and are situated in the immediate, excellent vicinity of the famous Premier Cru estates Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Lafite-Rothschild.

Floor: The terroir is characterised by deep, barren Garonne gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and allow the vines to develop deep roots.

Owners & Pioneers

The Tesseron familySince 1975 The estate is now owned by the Tesseron family, after Guy Tesseron took it over from the Cruse family, a long-established wine merchants. It is currently run by Alfred and Justine Tesseron led.

The Organic Revolution: Together with Jean-Michel Comme, the estate’s long-standing technical director, Alfred Tesseron systematically transformed the estate. Since 2010, the Château has been completely certified biodynamic (Demeter/Ecocert). It is regarded as a true pioneer of top-class biodynamic viticulture throughout the Bordeaux region. For soil cultivation, horses are once again being used instead of tractors, amongst other methods.

Style

The style: Powerful, profound and intense, yet at the same time characterised by a Burgundian elegance and characterised by a silky texture.

Expansion: By avoiding the use of excessive amounts of new oak and making partial use of bespoke concrete amphorae (made from the estate’s own soil), the wines remain exceptionally precise, fresh and true to their terroir. They possess a monumental ageing potential spanning several decades.
