- Prädikat winesThis is the highest quality level in German viticulture. According to German wine law, Prädikat wines may only be made from one grape variety. Wines of this quality level may not be fortified. This means that the alcohol content may not be increased by adding sugar or must to the grape juice before or during fermentation.
- Quality winesQuality wine or quality wine from specified regions (Q.b.A.) must originate 100% from one of the 13 German wine-growing regions and be made exclusively from grape varieties authorised there. In addition, quality wines from certain wine-growing regions must successfully pass an official quality wine test. In Germany, a quality wine is given an official test number, which must appear on the label. A quality wine from Germany that is made from a single grape variety must be typical of this grape variety. If a vineyard site is indicated on the label in addition to the growing region, at least 85% of the grapes used must come from this single vineyard site; the remaining grapes must come from the same growing region.
- Country wineLandwein is the second lowest quality level after table wine. It is a wine with a protected geographical indication. To be allowed to bear the designation Deutscher Landwein, the wine must be made from at least 85% grapes that come from the specified Landwein region.
- Table wineA German table wine must have an alcohol content of at least 8.5 vol%, after fortification this value must not exceed 12 vol%.
